Wind

In the UK we have 40% of Europe's total wind energy.  But it is still largely untapped and only 0.5% of our electricity is generated in this way.

Uses range from very small turbines supplying energy for battery charging (on boats etc), to wind farms supplying electricity to the national grid.

Small scale wind turbines.

Wind speed increases with height so it's best to have the turbine high on a mast or tower usually between 9 and 12 metres high.  The ideal location has flat, clear exposure, free from excessive turbulence and obstructions such as large trees or other buildings.

Small scale building integrated wind turbines suitable for urban locations are currently being refined.  At present the level of electricity generated is minimal and noise and vibration can be an issue.

Knowledge of the local wind profile is critical to designing a wind energy system and being able to predict output.  At Advantage Projects we collect primary and secondary data about wind speed.  We would never recommend any installation until such data has been analysed.

Planning issues such as visual impact, noise and conservation also have to be considered.  System installation still requires planning permission.

If you are grid connected, you can export surplus electricity to the national grid and receive payment for it.  Levels of payment are currently under review but are set to rise in 2010.

If you would like more technical information about wind turbines send us an email and we will supply a detailed information sheet.
