Solar thermal water heating systems use heat from the sun to work alongside your conventional water heater. The technology is well developed with a large choice of equipment to suit many applications.
Benefits include providing almost all of your hot water during the summer months and about 50% of year round requirements. it also reduces your impact on the environment - the average domestic system reduces carbon dioxide emissions by around 400kg per year, depending on the fuel replaced.
There are different types of system. What best suits your needs depends on a range of factors, including the area of ideally south or south west facing roof, the angle of the roof for optimum absorption, the existing water heating system (e.g. some combi boilers aren't suitable) and your budget. You will hear the terms 'flat panel' and 'evacuated tubes' these are both types of solar thermal arrays.
For retro fitting to existing roofs it is important to check the structural integrity of the roof as they are heavy panels.
Planning permission restrictions have been lifted on most installations but it is best to check beforehand.
